Getting ONS Monthly RPI Series On-Line

For developers, economists, and data analysts, the ONS offers several straightforward methods to locate and download monthly CPI data.
  • Method 1: The Consumer Price Inflation Time Series Dataset (MM23)
The most comprehensive way to download all historical inflation data (CPI, CPIH, and RPI) in one go is through the MM23 dataset 2 .
    • Go to the official ONS website: ons.gov.uk 2 .
    • Use the search bar to search for “MM23” or “Consumer price inflation time series” 2, 6 .
    • Click on the dataset result titled Consumer price inflation time series 2 .
    • On this page, you will see download options for the current edition of the entire dataset 2, 1 :
      • CSV format (highly recommended for programming in Python/R) 2 .
      • XLSX format (best for Microsoft Excel) 2, 1 .
      • Structured Text 2 .
  • Method 2: Accessing Specific CPI Time Series (Using CDIDs)
If you only need the core monthly CPI index or CPI annual rate rather than the entire database, you can look up the unique four-character CDID (Series ID) codes assigned by the ONS 4 . The two most common CDIDs for CPI are 3, 6 :
    • D7BT: CPI Index (All Items, base year 2015 = 100) 3, 6 .
    • D7G7: CPI Annual Inflation Rate (percentage change) 3 .
    • To download a specific series:
      • In the ONS search bar, enter the CDID (e.g., D7BT) 4, 6 .
      • Click on the corresponding time series page (e.g., CPI INDEX 00: ALL ITEMS 2015=100) 3, 6 .
      • On the interactive chart page, you can apply filters (e.g., selecting a specific year range) and click the “Download” button to export that single series as a CSV or Excel file 7, 6

  • Method 3: Monthly Excel Statistical Tables
For pre-formatted, human-readable tables containing the latest month’s breakdown of the CPI basket:
    • Navigate to the “Consumer price inflation, UK” statistical bulletin (published monthly) 1, 2 .
    • Scroll to the “Datasets” section or search for “Consumer price inflation tables” 1 .
    • Download the accompanying Excel workbook (.xlsx), which contains sheets detailing CPI contributions, growth rates, and COICOP division index values 1, 5.
