BOE Data on Deposits and Repos in Companies

The Deposits & Repos BOE (Bank of England) dataset captures the liability side of the balance sheet for UK-resident Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) vis-à-vis UK residents other than banks and building societies 3, 5 .
  • Data Source & Reporting
    This data is primarily gathered monthly and quarterly from financial institutions via Form AD (Analysis of deposits from UK residents) 5, 7 .
  • Type of Deposits
    • Sight Deposits: Funds that can be fully or partially withdrawn on demand or by the close of the next business day without interest penalties 2. These include personal current accounts and operational business deposit accounts.
    • Time Deposits: Fixed-term deposits or accounts requiring a notice period before withdrawal 2 .
  • Repurchase Agreements (Repos)
    • A repo occurs when a bank sells a security (typically a government bond/gilt) to a counterparty with a commitment to repurchase it at a specified future date and price 1, 4 .
    • In BoE statistical reporting, cash received by a reporting bank under a repo is classified as a collateralized deposit liability 4, 8.
    • This category measures the outstanding stock and monthly changes of these repo positions, which are critical for understanding interbank liquidity and central bank market operations 1, 6.
